Stephen Kellert was a renowned American social ecologist and one of the leading figures in the development of biophilic design. His work focused on the relationship between humans and the natural environment, emphasising the importance of incorporating nature into built environments to enhance human well-being. Kellert's contributions to landscape architecture include his pioneering work in biophilic design, a concept he co-developed, which argues that humans are innately drawn to nature and that reconnecting with nature can improve health, productivity, and mental well-being(Kellert et al.,2008).

Kellert was a professor at Yale University and authored several influential books, including Biophilic Design; The Theory, Science and practice of Bring Buildings to Life (2008), which explores the integration of natural elements in architecture and urban planning. He also co-authored The Biophilia Hypothesis with Edward O. Wilson, which laid the groundwork for the idea that humans have an inherent connection to nature (Wilson & Kellert, 1993). Through his work, Kellert advocated for the inclusion of natural elements like plants, water features, and natural materials in landscape design, contributing significantly to the fields of landscape architecture, environmental psychology, and sustainable design.

Kellert's research has shaped modern sustainable urban design and landscape architecture by promoting the idea that well designed environments that include natural elements are not only aesthetically pleasing but are crucial for improving public health and well-being (Kellert et al., 2008).
