THE HIGH LINE
A SUCCESSFUL CASE STUDY IN IMPROVING PUBLIC MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.
Fig 1: The High-line, New York City.
The High-line in New York City is a notable example of biophilic design, integrating the 'Nature in the space' theory to enhance public mental health and well-being. This elevated park repurposes a former railway, incorporating native vegetation, water feature, and open views to reconnect visitors with nature in an urban setting. Key elements include abundant greenery, dynamic sight-lines, multi- sensory experiences such as rustling of leaves and birdsong. These features align with principles of biophilic design that emphasize direct contact with nature to improve psychological and emotional health.
Surveys and studies support its positive impact. For example, visitor feedback highlights reduced stress levels and increased feelings of relaxation and happiness. A study indicated that 78% of visitors experienced enhanced well-being, and the park draws millions annually, providing a space for social interaction and mindfulness(Bright power, 2023). These findings demonstrate the High Line's role in promoting urban mental health.
